Top 10 Tips to Pass Your Road Test

Expert advice from ICBC-certified instructors who know exactly what examiners are looking for.

1

Check Your Mirrors Constantly

Examiners watch for frequent mirror checks. Check mirrors every 5-10 seconds and before any maneuver.

2

Shoulder Check Before Lane Changes

Always do an obvious shoulder check. Make it clear to the examiner that you're checking your blind spots.

3

Follow Speed Limits Precisely

Drive at or slightly below the speed limit. Exceeding it even by 5 km/h can result in failure.

4

Complete Stops at Stop Signs

Come to a full 3-second stop. Your wheels must stop moving completely—rolling stops are instant fails.

5

Signal Early and Clearly

Signal at least 30 meters before turning or changing lanes. Keep it on until you complete the maneuver.

6

Keep Safe Following Distance

Maintain a 2-3 second gap behind vehicles. Use the "two-second rule" to gauge safe distance.

7

Stay in Your Lane

Keep centered in your lane. Touching or crossing lane markings unnecessarily will cost you points.

8

Watch for Pedestrians

Always yield to pedestrians at crosswalks. Scan intersections and sidewalks constantly.

9

Practice Parallel Parking

Master this skill before your test. You may be asked to parallel park, and it's a common failure point.

10

Stay Calm and Confident

Nerves cause mistakes. Take deep breaths, trust your training, and drive like you normally would.
